Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Brief explanation about Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Gynaecology and Obstetrics (abbreviated as OB/GYN, O&G, Obs & Gynae) are medical specialties that both deal with the female reproductive system. The main difference between them is that gynaecology deals with disorders or diseases of the reproductive system of women who are not pregnant while obstetrics deals with pregnant women and their unborn children.

Obstetrics and gynaecology are often combined as a single medical and surgical specialty in postgraduate training programs because of their many overlapping functions.

After this combined training, OB/GYN specialists are able to deal with both obstetrical/ gynaecological issues affecting women.

  1. Gynaecological
  • Assessment or monitoring of the health and well-being of the female reproductive organs and their reproduction ability. This specialty covers gynaecological issues from infancy, adolescent up to the later years.
  • Surgical procedures such as laparoscopy, cone biopsies, hysterectomy, minimal access or keyhole surgery,
  • Surgical procedures after a miscarriage, to stop abnormal bleeding, or for gynaecological cancers.
  • Perform tests to detect cervical and other gynaecological cancers.
  • Fertility treatment.
  1. Obstetrics
  • Attending to more complex deliveries that require the use of forceps and other instruments. Easy deliveries are usually attended to by midwives.
  • Emergency or planned C-sections.
  • Cervical sutures to prevent miscarriage.
  • ECV (external cephalic version) to turn the baby in the womb to the correct birth position.
  • Testing fetuses for symptoms of congenital disorders like Down’s syndrome.

Why people would like to have Obstetrics and Gynaecology Treatments in Turkey?

Many women from other countries choose to go to Turkey for solutions to their OB/GYN problems because of the awareness of the rising standards in its medical facilities as well as medical-surgical specialists and at more affordable costs than in their own countries.

  1. Turkey has good obstetricians and gynaecologists / and hospitals

One of the common OB/GYN procedures is C section. In fact, Turkey tops the list of Organization for the Security and Co-operation in Europe (OECD) countries for women who prefer C-section births

The data is contrary to the popular belief that women generally would like to avoid giving birth by caesarean section. It costs more than vaginal delivery and is considered safer for both the mother and the baby.

So, a study of 400+ was conducted to know why Turkish women prefer caesarean delivery even if only 13% of them considered C-section as the ideal mode of childbirth.

The study showed that only about 16% of the women needed C-section and about 84% could have had no problem with vaginal delivery. However, more women chose to have C-section for the following reasons:

  • Almost half of the women wanted to avoid labor pain.
  • Almost 15% believed that C-section is a healthier mode of delivery for the baby. Almost 85% agreed that vaginal delivery is the ideal delivery mode but only about half of them said that they will choose vaginal delivery the next time.
  • About 72% of the women were satisfied with their delivery through C-section.

Although the study shows C-section expertise of OB/GYNs in Turkey, the Health Ministry has an ongoing program to convince women about the benefits of normal delivery and to discourage births via C-section.

  1. It is more affordable in Turkey compared to most countries, especially Europe and US.

C-section delivery in Turkey costs from $2,300 to $2,700 in private hospitals. The cost can go as low as $1000 in a public hospital.  It’s much lower than the cost in a US hospital which can range from $14,000 to $25,000. The cost of vaginal delivery in the USA ranges from $9,000 to $17,000.
